Internships at HSP

HSP is a not-for-profit organization serving low-income seniors, children and families in DuPage and Kane Counties. Our 15,000-sq.-ft.center is located in Carol Stream. We offer unpaid internships for college students designed to fit the student’s schedule within our regular work hours of Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m (5:30 on Thursdays.) We would like a minimum of 20 hours per week over a period of at least 3 months. More information about us and our programs can be found at www.humanitarianservice.org. General Internship

Requirements:

  • Good customer service skills
  • Comfortable with using basic computer operations in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and requests simultaneously
  • Ability to speak Spanish a plus, but not required.


Responsibilities:

  • Research new sources for food and toy donations
  • Contact groups for donations
  • Assist with day-to-day operations such as answering the phone, telephoning clients and receiving and recording donations from center visitors
  • Conduct tours of our center
  • Train and work with volunteers to box gifts and sort food
  • Research grants
  • Other duties as needed

 

 

 

Marketing/Sales Internship

Requirements:

  • Marketing, business, or communications major preferred
  • Must be very comfortable with phone work
  • Ability to create and maintain relationships with clients
  • Persuasive and articulate
  • Comfortable with using basic computer operations in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word

Responsibilities:

  • Creating and editing flyers and brochures
  • Calling past and potential clients
  • Contacting school, church and corporate groups to encourage fundraising for sponsorships.
  • Meeting with past and potential clients
  • Creating/editing the marketing manual
  • Other duties as needed

 

 

 

Accounting Internship

Requirements:

  •  Accounting or business major preferred
  • Comfortable with using basic computer operations in Microsoft Excel and Word or Quattro and WordPerfect.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting Co-Founder and CFO Floyd with HSP’s accounting and finances.
  • Prepare cash receipts entries
  • Prepare Gift-In Kind (GIK) entries
  • Post Monthly entries
    • Payroll
    • Cash Receipts
    • Disbursements
    • GIK
    • Donated Services
    • Etc.

 

  • Currently using Peachtree Accounting Software
  • Other duties as needed

 

 

 

Public Relations Internship

Requirements:

  • Communications/Journalism or English major preferred but not required
  • Writing Intensive

Responsibilities:

  • Writing the morning and afternoon blog and posting it to our social media accounts
  • Interviewing community leaders of organizations that have donated money or goods to HSP
  • Writing and distributing press releases
  • Assisting the Community Outreach Coordinator
  • Other duties as needed

 

 

 

Senior Citizen Project Assistant

Requirements:

  • Must be very comfortable with phone work
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Spanish speaking or Spanish major preferred but not required
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Publisher and Word

Responsibilities:

  • Calling volunteers, loaders, and seniors to help coordinate the Senior Citizen Project
  • Creating referrals for seniors
  • Designing graphics and letters for SCP

 

 Project Management Internship

Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Comfortable working with volunteers
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Publisher and Word

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the success of programs, which, depending on the season, may be geared towards childhood hunger, senior citizen hunger, providing school supplies, community outreach
  • Communicate with clients, donors, and volunteers to coordinate various programs
  • Assist managers of these programs so they run effectively for the needy recipients, volunteers, and donors involved

 

Grant Writing Internship

Requirements:

  • Stong writing and communication skills
  • Comfortable with both researching and writing
  • Knowledge of basic Microsoft Office Programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Researching new grants and fundraising opportunities.
  • Completing grant applications.
  • Writing letters of intent.
