All of the seniors in our Seniors Citizen Project endure hardship and poverty on a daily basis. Some of them, however, are lucky enough to be surrounded by people who, if unable to help financially, are at least able to offer them moral support. For many of our seniors this is yet another luxury they go without. When we meet seniors who live in utter isolation, with no one to even offer them a kind word, it breaks our hearts. For this reason we feel ever more determination to continue to bring solace and sustenance into their lives. When we met 85 year old Valle , we knew that this was someone who desperately needed our help. We’d like to share some information on this strong woman so you may know her better.

Valle is an immigrant from Germany. She moved here with her husband in 1951. The two spent many happy years together, but he passed away 17 years ago. After that, Valle found herself alone. The entire rest of her family, including her son, live in Germany. Her English has never gotten quite up to the level she would like it to be, making social interaction even more difficult. The one person she trusted was her caregiver who would help take care of her health problems, but that relationship ended with the caregiver racking up $50,000 worth of charges on Valle’s credit card and then disappearing. Poor Valle didn’t know what to do!

On top of all of this, Valle has many health problems to worry about. A double amputee who is confined to a wheelchair, Valle suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure. She regularly pays as much as $200 to purchase her medication each month. She has been in and out of hospitals the last several years with 6 different operations which have left her with tremendous debt. Her monthly income of $1062 just isn’t enough to pay her subsidized rent of $100 along with all of her bills. Valle is forced to live each day in fear and isolation.

We are confident that we can be a positive force for change in Valle’s life. As a diabetic, receiving healthy fresh produce from HSP each month is something which is truly beneficial to Valle. It allows her to save money on food, as well as providing her with good, nutritious food for her to eat. Despite Valle’s terrible circumstances, we strongly believe that by coming together we have already made a real difference for her. We are so thankful to you for joining with us to let Valle know that there are people out there who care about her.

Things to Remember about Valle:

• Valle’s birthday is July 12, 1921
• Her monthly income is $1,062
• She can’t eat sugar or salt
• She likes tuna and potatoes
