When we here at HSP make our monthly delivery of food and personal care items to our 105 senior citizens we are not only bringing them nourishment. We feel that one of the most important aspects of our Senior Citizen Project is that it gives hope and comfort to those who need it the most. Many senior citizens live isolated lives, not knowing if there is anyone who cares about them. Such is the case with 75 year old Sava, a Bosnian refugee we met just last year. We are thankful to you for joining with us to bring comfort and kindness to her troubled existence. It has been a whole year since we last updated you on Sava and we wanted to share some additional information with you about this strong and warm hearted woman.

Sava fled her home of Bosnia to escape the harsh conditions during the war. She and her husband were optimistic at first about their new life in America, but tragedy soon struck. After having only been here for 2 years her beloved husband passed away. For the last three years she has lived a lonely and isolated life. She doesn’t speak much English and has not been able to get to know her neighbors very well. She says everything in her apartment reminds her of her husband. Fortunately there is a couple in her building who speak her native language, but for the most part Sava keeps to herself watching television and listening to music. She also enjoys reading, and comments that she is proud of the fact that she taught herself to read and write in her native language without ever having go to school.

Health problems are a big concern for Sava. She suffers from high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. She is also severely depressed and starting to show signs of memory loss. Her income of $550 a month is barely enough to cover her subsidized rent of $145 along with all of her medical and utility bills.

Sava’s dire circumstances moved us into action when we met her. We saw the need in her life and knew we could make a difference for her. Now, Sava never has to worry about where her next meal will be coming from. The food and gifts she receives from HSP are made possible by you. We are so grateful to you for the love and kindness you give. Sava says she is touched that there are those out there who care enough about her to help her. We feel privileged to join with you to ease the suffering of this wonderful woman towards the end of her life.

Things to Remember about Sava:
• Sava’s birthday is November 7, 1928.
• Her monthly income is $550.
• She loves flowers.
• She enjoys chicken, beef, and all fruits and vegetables.
