Everyone must face challenges in their lives. We all hope, however, that when we face those challenges the people close to us are there to support us and guide us through these tough times. What if the people that should be supporting you, however, are the ones who are causing all of your problems? That's how life was for 64 year old Patsy for many years. New to our program, we are delighted to be able to join with you to provide Patsy the care and support she so desperately needs. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to her.

Patsy has not had an easy life. She is a lifelong resident of the Chicagoland area, but grew up relatively poor. She sought a better life in marriage, but her husband of 28 years turned out to be her worst nightmare. She said that he developed a drinking problem and became increasingly more abusive and mean to Patsy and her children. Eventually, Patsy decided she could take no more and left. She and her children lived for a time in shelters while they tried to get their feet back on the ground. Since then, Patsy has been struggling to make ends meet. She receives $643 a month from social security, but over $100 of that goes right to her subsidized rent and bills, before she even has to think about things like medical payments.

Health problems are also a source of concern for Patsy. Patsy says that her health has become worse recently, citing trouble breathing due to emphysema. She also suffers from osteoporosis, bladder problems and says that she often has great pain in her feet which limits her activities. When she is in a down mood, getting flowers never fails to cheer her up. When Patsy is at home, she sits and reads, listens to music or watches TV. Patsy is very social and likes to have company and spend time with people, so the lack of energy is hard on her. Fortunately, she is still able to partake of her favorite activity- ironing! She says that she knows it's not normal, but she has always felt that ironing clothes is a relaxing way to spend an hour or two in the day!

Patsy says she is also truly grateful for HSP's service. "Without you," Patsy said to us, "I would probably be on the streets!" She told us that it's truly a God Send to her to receive fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishables, personal care items and other gifts from around the house each month from HSP. It really helps to ease the financial burden she lives with. Patsy has been through a great deal in her life. We are confident, however, that together we can provide her care which will better her situation!
