Often, the psychological effects of poverty are every bit as painful as the material effects. Despair, hopeless and misery can crush a person's spirit just as quickly as hunger or illness can crush their body, but we don't see these things taking place. For many of the needy seniors in our Senior Citizen Project, the misery of solitude is one of the worst parts of their day. That is why we are so glad for seniors such as 74 year old Michael and 57 year old wife Linda who, though living through hard times, have a love for each other which serves as their compass. We are so thankful to you for joining with us to bring hope to this kind hearted couple. We'd like to take this time to share some of their story with you.

As you know, Michael and Linda, both lifelong Cubs fans, grew up very close to each other in Chicago, but never knew each other until recently. They were only married three years ago! It is truly a wonderful story for two people who have known emotional pain in their lives from failed relationships to never give up on finding the one person that makes them happy. They are both overjoyed to have the support of the other, and feel that together they can forge through their problems. In fact, Linda actually does volunteer work at the building the two live in!

We are very glad that they have such a good attitude, because their problems are numerous! Linda suffers from asthma which she must take medication for. Michael is battling Parkinson's disease and heart trouble. He has also recently had expensive surgeries on his knee and cataracts. He is thankful to be done with the surgeries and be on the road to recovery. He is able again to do some of his favorite activities such as go on walks and play cards with his friends. He especially missed partaking of his favorite hobby, fly fishing. He is proud to say that in his younger and healthier days he caught all sorts of larger fish. Sadly, despite Michael’s recovery, the medical bills continue to pile up and the couple often has to wonder how they will make ends meet. The two do have family, but they all live far away and can offer little support. With a combined social security income of only $1154, $700 of which goes to their rent, you can imagine how little is left each month to spend on important items.

For this reason, HSP is proud to be able to provide comfort and support to Michael and Linda. They say they love receiving fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishables, personal care items and other gifts for around their home delivered to their door each month. Michael told us that the food is great, and that the two of them happily eat all of it each month, just in time for the next delivery. Michael and Linda are truly fortunate to have each other to share their lives with. We feel fortunate to have supporters like you who allow us to provide for these wonderful people, who need us so!
