The stereotype that most of us have about senior citizens is that they are lethargic and tired all the time, disallowing them to do anything with their day. While there certainly are seniors who fit this description, a quick look at the needy seniors in our Senior Citizen Project will show you just how untrue it can be! Many seniors, even those with limited incomes, try to remain as active as they were when they were young, well into their winter years. Take our senior Maude; who is 74 years old. She is still very active and engaged with life. She has many hardships she must face, but keeping a positive attitude helps her get through her days. We are thankful to you for coming together with us to provide for Maude and we'd like to take this opportunity to update you on her situation.

As you know, Maude has several health problems. She uses an inhaler to battle her emphysema four times a day, and her lower back is still racked with pain. Despite this, Maude is not the type to rest on her laurels and feel sorry for herself. She is one of the most active seniors in our Senior Citizen Project, going on daily walks, volunteering with a local community center, and driving other needy seniors who are unable to drive themselves places they need to go. She also cooks herself breakfast and dinner every day, and is part of a Bible study group which meets regularly. This is not exactly surprising given that in her youth Maude tells us that she was quite the ballroom dancer! Even though she is unable to keep the pace of life at what she would like now that she is getting older, she told us that she was able to dance a bit at a Mexican festival put on by volunteers at the community center she volunteers at. She said she had a wonderful time! We are always overjoyed to hear good news like this from Maude because we know the difficult circumstances she lives with. Receiving only $789 a month from social security, over $200 of which goes immediately to her subsidized rent and utilities, it is easy to understand how Maude has trouble making ends meet. She relies on her car to get around, but with gas prices creeping higher, her wallet has been feeling the pinch!

For this reason we are truly glad to be able to provide for Maude. A woman who enjoys the simple pleasures of life (she says one of her favorite memories is seeing the northern lights!), Maude truly appreciates all she receives from HSP. A financial burden is lifted when she receives fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishables, personal care items and gifts for around the house each month, delivered right to her door by friendly volunteers.

Maude is the type of person who maintains a positive attitude and a giving spirit despite even her own difficulties. We are happy to join with you to pass the compassion she shows to others on to her!
