Many of the needy seniors in our Senior Citizen Project have tragic life stories which it can be difficult to hear. We often can't imagine what it must be like to have been through everything that they have experienced in their lives. One senior who comes to mind is 63 year old Mary Sue B. She has experienced family problems, health problems and poverty in her existence. For these reasons we are so thankful to you for your continued support of this woman who needs our assistance so much. We would like to take this opportunity to update you on her situation.

Mary Sue finds it difficult not to be down sometimes. Depression seems to be a problem which has plagued her family. However, her chubby cat, Nick often cheers her up and she finds relief by going to comedy websites. Mary Sue had two brothers who lived locally. One, however, she is estranged from, given his inability to control his temper, and the other recently killed himself. This made Mary Sue particularly depressed. She sometimes feels blue based on the fact that she can no longer do many of the activities which she used to enjoy so much. Mary used to be a golfer, but her health problems keep her from being able to play anymore. Now, she enjoys listening to talk radio, doing puzzles and playing games on her computer, and crocheting.

As you know, Mary Sue suffers from diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, eye problems, and heart disease, on top of her depression. She is also sad to report that her eyesight has been getting worse. She needs surgery on her cataracts, as she has become almost totally blind, and has trouble getting to the doctor. Because of this, her doctors make house calls. She does have a caretaker named Doris, provided by Senior Services, who has become a very dear friend of hers. She says that she has become almost totally blind! Even if she was able to get the surgery, her limited income of $$927 a month, as much as $750 of which goes to her subsidized rent and bills, means that she's not entirely sure she could pay for the necessary procedures!

You might imagine, given these hardships, that Mary Sue constantly dwelled on the negative. Even though she battles depression, she still says she loves to laugh and is thankful for the few blessings she has.

Mary Sue loves receiving fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishables, personal care items and gifts for around the house from HSP, for example. She said that she absolutely loved all of the Christmas gifts she received from HSP last year, and that she enjoys all the food she gets each month. Mary Sue may have much pain in her life, but we are confident that, together, we can continue to provide the support she needs!
