Through our Senior Citizen Project, we are often witness to the limits age can place on a person’s physical activities and interests. Many of members of the program suffer from conditions such as arthritis that prevent them from participating in many of the sports or exercise routines they once loved. However, we are also witness to the incredible power of the mind that refuses to fall prey to the effects of aging. This phenomenon can be seen clearly in one of our new seniors, 89 year old Manubhai. Although physically limited by several health constraints, Manubhai’s interests stretch from the world of politics to the care of plant life with several stops in between. We would like to take this opportunity to tell you more about his interests and share with you some background on this man.

Manubhai grew up in India and became accustomed to a large family. Sadly, of the several siblings with whom he grew up, he has only one sister remaining. Striking another blow to Manubhai’s family foundation was the loss of his wife, Indiraben. He does find comfort in knowing that his family is still large, just different. He has five children, but unfortunately, because of their own jobs and families, they have limited time and resources to support Manubhai or even visit very often. Thankfully, the county provides him with a homemaker to help with the household chores he can not handle on his own.

The county provided homemaker is very necessary for Manubhai. He suffers from several medical conditions that severely limit his mobility, including arthritis, two artificial knees that require him to walk with a cane, and cataract surgery on both eyes. Unfortunately, Manubhai must also deal with the added strain of financial insecurity. With an income of only $564/month, $400 of which is applied immediately toward rent, Manubhai has a difficult time affording the necessities of life.

Thanks to your help Manubhai will not have to worry about how he can afford to eat and can focus on his many hobbies, such as tending to his plants or assembling jigsaw puzzles. He can also read up on the wide variety of subjects he enjoys, including religion, medical news, science fiction, or the daily newspaper. To fend off homesickness, he enjoys watching television shows and cooking recipes from his native India. Thanks to your contribution, he can use the fresh fruits, vegetables, and bread, frozen meats, paper products, and non-perishable goods to fix these special meals and his secret pal gifts will remind him that someone cares. The impact you are making on this deserving
senior’s life is immeasurable.
