Many of the seniors in our Senior Citizen Project have come to understand poverty and hardship as a way of life. They have been consistently downtrodden and lacking their whole lives. Some have suffered tragedies and setbacks which many of us can’t even imagine. When we hear these stories of heartache and loss from our seniors it only solidifies our resolve to continue to bring comfort and compassion into their lives. Kode and Stoja are two seniors who our hearts went out to when we met them last year. They have not had easy lives, but we knew that we could make a difference in their day to day existence. We want to share some information with you to help you

Kode and Stoja are political refugees from Bosnia who came to the United States to find a better life. They have been married for almost 60 years and have always loved and supported each other. Their hardships have been many, however. 10 years ago they visited one of their sons who was in Yugoslavia. Not even a week after they had visited him he died. They have also had another son pass away here in the U.S. just a year ago. A third son lives far away in North Carolina. Their daughter lives nearby, but has severe psychological problems. Kode and Stoja have no family to look out for them!

This is a problem considering the couple’s health and financial problems. They both suffer from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Kode has problems with his prostate and is also severely obese. Stoja is clinically depressed. Both of them are on several different medications. Their income of merely $829 for the both of them is barely enough to cover their $200 subsidized rent along with their utility and medical bills.

Despite all of this, Kode and Stoja try to remain positive. They enjoy keeping a garden together and both love reading and listening to the radio. They keep each other’s spirits up as best they can. We are happy to make sure that they never have to worry about food or personal care products. We are so grateful to you, Sheri, for empowering us to bring joy into their lives. After suffering such hardship we feel privileged to be able to show them that there are still people out there who are willing to come together on their behalf.
