There is much that those of us who are young fear about growing older. We hope to be surrounded by loved ones, living in good health and comfort and enjoying a life of quiet leisure. The reality, for many, however, is far from this idyllic dream. For the poverty stricken seniors in our Senior Citizen Project, the dreams of an old age spent in peace have been disrupted by dire circumstances. They must take each day as it comes, hoping that they will be able to make ends meet. For 74 year old Jacqueline things have never been easy. The perils of aging have merely added to her already numerous financial problems. We are confident, however, that with your help we can join together to be a beacon of light which shines through the clouds which follow her. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to this kind hearted woman.

A native of the Chicago suburbs, Jacqueline is an extremely social person. Despite never having married, she has stayed busy her whole life with her hobbies- reading, watching movies, playing cards, taking walks and otherwise being social. Well into her winter years she is still known for her outgoing nature among those who live in her senior complex with her. This friendliness masks some of the hardships which Jacqueline has had to endure, however. She has always been extremely close with her brothers and sisters. Their parents died when they were relatively young, so Jacqueline and her siblings became very tight knit. She never wanted for company or care. Sadly, however, her brother and one of her sisters have both died recently, leaving her with only one sister left. She sees her sister as much as she can, but she dearly misses her departed siblings. This, however, is not Jacqueline's only trouble.

Suffering from a great many physical ailments, Jacqueline worries more and more about her health. Acute asthma makes it very difficult for her to breathe, and she also suffers from high blood pressure. Heart trouble has sent her to the doctor several times. She is also incontinent and her eyesight is beginning to fail. All of this has caused a great deal of anxiety for Jacqueline, which is only compounded by her financial woes. Her social security income is only $653 a month. Her subsidized rent is $157 and her bills often run as high as $170 or more each month, meaning that about half of her income goes immediately out the door. With her health continuing to deteriorate, Jacqueline worries about her ability to be able to afford the medical bills ifsomething serious were to happen to her!

Fortunately, HSP is committed to lessening her financial burden! Jacqueline says it is a Godsend to her to receive three to four weeks worth of groceries each month including 6 selections of fresh fruits, 7 selections of fresh vegetables, 7 frozen meats, five bags of non-perishables and personal care items delivered right to her door. She also said that everyone involved with HSP is incredibly wonderful and she appreciates the financial strain which she is relieved of by not having to purchase groceries and household items which she receives from HSP. With very few immediate relatives to look out for her, it is also helpful for Jacqueline to know that there are people out there who care about her and are always ready to help her when she is in need. For all of this, we must thank you for your part in helping to make it possible for HSP to provide support and care for someone who truly needs it!
