For many of the needy seniors in our Senior Citizen Project poverty is not something new. They have struggled their whole lives, and they continue to do so into their old age. The difficulty of
making ends meet never seems to fully subside, and for many of them, hope always seems to be far off. For this reason we are committed to bringing them the best service we possibly can to ease their suffering. 71 year-old Gregoria has many health and financial problems to contend with. We are truly thankful to you for joining with us to provide her the kind of comfort she needs. We would like to take this time to update you on her situation.

Gregoria lives with her teenage grandson and the two of them survive off of her limited income. As mentioned, poverty is something which many of our seniors have struggled with for long periods of time, and Gregoria is no exception. Part of the reason her grandson lives with her is because her children are all as financially stressed as she is. Gregoria, however, is not the kind of person to spend all her time feeling down. While she said that she has had a particularly uneventful year, she does enjoy many things in her day. She likes to go on walks, and sometimes goes over to a friends’ house or to a park nearby her house. Gregoria also enjoys cooking, especially traditional Latino dishes like rice and beans. We are glad that she has things which bring her joy, because she has so much in her life to contend with. As you know, Gregoria suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol and painful arthritis which make daily activities difficult. She would love to pursue sewing, but does not own a machine. She also continues to have financial burdens, receiving only $540 a month from social security for her and her grandson to live off of. Given that her subsidized rent and bills can sometimes total to over $400, it is incredibly difficult for her to make ends meet!

That's where HSP comes in! Given her love of cooking, Gregoria is thrilled to receive fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishables, personal care items and other gifts around the house from HSP each month. Saving Gregoria time, energy and money, all of this is delivered right to her door by friendly
volunteers.

We are happy to be a beacon of light, shining through the dark clouds in Gregoria's life. This poor woman may have a great deal to worry about each day but we are confident that, together, we can continue to provide her the support she needs!
