As we get to know the new seniors in our program we are often saddened by how dire their circumstances are. We know, however, that we can be a positive force in their life to help turn their situation around! One of our new seniors, Beverly, has known poverty her whole life. She has lived in constant struggle, but we are confident that with your help we can begin to bring comfort into her existence. We wanted to take this opportunity to share a little bit of information about Beverly so you can get to know her better.

Beverly grew up in the projects of Chicago. Her parents divorced when she was 13 years old and Beverly’s mother got a job so she could afford to take care of Beverly and her 6 siblings. This left Beverly to fend for herself much of the time. She was married young, but her husband suffered from lung cancer and thus was never able to work. This meant that the couple struggled with poverty their whole lives. After a long bout with illness her husband passed away 16 years ago. Since then her life has become even more of a struggle.

Health problems have become an ever more present threat to Beverly’s well being over the last several years. To date she has had open heart surgery and has survived two bouts of cancer. She is also a diabetic, and suffers from arthritis of the back and knees which makes it incredibly difficult for her to get around. On top of all of that she suffers from high blood pressure and has to watch what she eats. Complicating matters further are her immense financial problems. Her monthly income of $579 barely covers her rent of $425. This is putting a huge financial strain on all of them, because there just isn’t enough money to go around.

We were so happy to hear Beverly say that the food she received from her first delivery was “a Godsend!” After hearing of her situation our hearts went out to her and we wanted to do everything we could to make a difference in her life. She says she couldn’t believe how much there was to eat, and was happy to receive many of her favorite foods. She can count on receiving all the food she needs each month from HSP. Thanks to you we can continue to be a “Godsend” for her.

Things to Remember about Beverly:

• Beverly’s birthday is August 29, 1940
• She likes to read and watch TV
• Her monthly income is $579
• Her favorite foods include chicken, lamb chops, oatmeal and orange juice.
