Family has always been a central part of 80-year old Annie's life.  So keeping in touch means a great deal to her.  She sees various family members all the time: at least one person a week.  She’s also fortunate to have one daughter who helps around the house.  But despite her close ties to family, none can help Annie  financially.  As a result, she has had to do without many things  including what many would consider necessities, such as a working telephone.

As you are well aware, our mission is to help seniors in poverty throughout DuPage and Kane counties. Here at HSP we see the first hand effects of crushing poverty every day. Whenever we talk to one of our 115 seniors, many of them share what’s been going on in their lives.  Some being good and some being very sad.  Our hearts always go out to them.  Many times we wonder just how they can get by with so many illnesses and financial troubles creating frustration and worry which always takes a high toll on them.  For too many, sharing their stress of not being able to purchase the things they need is compounded simply by being old.  Despite these challenges, some of our seniors always seem to find something cheery to talk about in their lives.  Many are very strong and courageous.  They face each day with a smile, feeling grateful and counting the few blessings they have.  It is an inspiration for us to see their warm spirits remain positive in the face of difficult adversities.

Annie grew up in Mississippi.  After moving to Chicago, she lived on the Southside for 13 years.  There she worked at a hospital, a laundromat, and a caterer.  Married several times, she has seven children who now live all over the world.  She has lived at her current residence for the past three years.

Good food is something Annie really enjoys, especially greens, grapes, bananas, oranges, apples, chicken, beef, and fish.  So she definitely looks forward to receiving her 90-pound grocery delivery each month, including five varieties of fresh fruits, six varieties of fresh vegetables, seven selections of frozen meats, five bags of non-perishable goods, and one bag of paper products and personal care items.

Physically, Annie takes heart medication and has high blood pressure.  Bad knees also trouble her and she gets cortisone shots for one.  She wears hearing aids and could really use new glasses.  Her lifestyle, though, includes activities such as walking with a neighbor or going out with a friend.  Bingo, puzzles, shopping, crossword puzzles, computer games, and watching T.V. also keep her busy.

Annie has a monthly income of $699.  Her rent and monthly expenses total $78.  With assistance from HSP, her monthly delivery of nutritious food will ensure that she eats right to stay healthy and active.  As a member of the HSP family, we will be there to help Annie get through these difficult times.
