When a senior has been with us for a long time we can become very close to them. After so many years of service we learn about their lives and their interests and we look forward to hearing from them and learning how they are doing. It can be very difficult, however, when we see the seniors in our program go through difficult times. We share their sorrow and their pain, and hope as hard as we can that they weather the storm. During these times, our resolve to continue to bring support and comfort into their life only becomes stronger. One senior who has been having difficulty lately is Annie, your adopted senior. Turning 91 this year, Annie has been in our program for an amazing 16 years now! We have grown very fond of her, but she has several problems she has to deal with on a daily basis. We’re so thankful to you for empowering us to better serve our old friend Annie. It has been a whole year since we last updated you on her so we wanted to share some new
information.

Annie was born in Georgia, and sadly her father died when she was very young. Only child Annie and her mother had to fend for themselves. When she was younger, Annie was married, briefly, but the marriage ended quickly in divorce. She found out later that her ex-husband died of blood poisoning shortly after their divorce. While married, Annie had two daughters who are still a big part of her life. Sadly, they can offer little financial support, despite Annie’s great need.

Health problems continue to plague Annie. As you know, she was in the hospital for a heart attack two years ago. She also had to be hospitalized for a minor stroke. Her health problems have caused her to lose a great deal of weight. She is now down to 114 lbs. Her daughter says that she is terrified of hospitals and the last time she had to go she screamed in anguish the whole time she was there.

Annie has a tendency to wander at night, which means she cannot be left alone. One of her daughter’s nieces is nice enough to spend most of her nights with Annie, but doesn’t know how much longer she will be able to do this. The family is afraid, however, because they simply cannot afford to hire someone to stay with Annie. On top of this, Annie is deathly afraid of being put into a nursing home, and her daughters fear they wouldn’t be able to afford one which was up to their standards. On an income of only $500 a month you can imagine how limited Annie’s resources are.

When we hear about Annie’s troubled situation our hearts go out to her and her family. Fortunately, Annie will never have to worry about where her next meal will come from. Her daughter says the food she receives is invaluable in helping Annie stay as healthy as she can. She also loves receiving presents each month from her Secret Pal. While it can be difficult for us to see Annie go through difficult times, we never lose sight of our mission to bring solace into her life. We are so happy to be able to join with you to comfort Annie when she needs it most.
