Feed the Kids

The Feed the Kids Project started in Summer 2004, and provided 11 impoverished families with a grocery delivery each month during June, July, and August.  For the Summer of 2008, we are proudly serving 90 families with 290 children!  Each family will receive approximately 250 pounds of food once a month, including:

•   At least 8 Boxes of Non- Perishable Food

•   An assortment of 8 fresh Vegetables

•   An assortment of 7 fresh Fruits.

•   Large loaf of fresh Bread

•   11 frozen Meats, including Beef, Chicken & Pork

Four years ago, we saw an article published in the Spring 2004 Hunger Digest newsletter published by America’s Second Harvest. The article was titled, “School’s Out; millions of kids face hunger”. This article was a huge eye-opener for us, and showed us the way to our next service endeavor. We knew we had to do something.

According to the article, “More than 16 million children receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year,” but during the summer these children “can’t find the wholesome food they need at home.” In fact, the Northern Illinois Food Bank reports that only 20% of the millions of children in the United States who receive free school lunches get any kind of help with nutritious food during the summer months. Thus began a new, exciting program dedicated to children - our future.

We investigated our surrounding community and found that there truly was a need. A local caseworker was able to tell us of her own experience. A single mother with three boys, aged 4, 9, and 12, looked pale-gray, skinny, and undernourished when the caseworker visited. The mother said that she did not have the money to buy enough groceries for her three growing boys. When we heard this story we knew we could help this family in their time of need!
