Feed the Kids

Feed the Kids Project started in Summer 2004 and provided 11 impoverished families with a grocery delivery during the months of June, July, and August. For the Summer of 2007, we are serving 75 families with 300 children with approximately 250 pounds of food once a month, which includes:

        •  At least 7 Bags of Non- Perishable Food
        •  An assortment of four fresh vegetables
        •  An assortment of eight fresh fruits
        •  Large loaf of fresh bread

        •  Meat including Beef, Chicken & Pork

We saw an article published in the Spring 2004 Hunger Digest newsletter published by America’s Second Harvest titled, “School’s out; millions of kids face hunger”.  This article was a huge eye opener for us showing us the way to our next endeavor of service. We knew we had to do something. According to their article, “more than 16 million children receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year.” During the summer these children “can’t find the wholesome food they need at home.” In fact, the Northern Illinois Food Bank reports that only 20% of the millions of children in the United States who receive free school lunches get any kind of help with nutritious food during the summer months. Thus began a new, exciting program dedicated to children - our future.

We investigated our surrounding community and found there truly was a need. A local caseworker was able to tell of her own experience. A single mother with three boys, aged 4, 9, and 12, looked pale-gray, skinny, and undernourished when the caseworker visited. The mother said that she did not have money to buy enough groceries for her three growing boys. When we heard this story we knew we could help this family in their time of need!
